A group of Year 9 students recently took part in the 22nd annual schools science conference produced in collaboration between Science4U and the University of Westminster, designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. This year’s theme, Science for the Next Generation, focused on how science is transforming the way we live and work.

Through a series of interactive workshops, students explored real-world scientific challenges and took part in hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. They also heard from university researchers who shared their personal journeys into careers in science and technology, highlighting the many paths open to those with a passion for discovery and innovation.

Students learned about ground-breaking developments, such as how Next Generation Sequencing is revolutionising the diagnosis and treatment of disease. They heard how artificial intelligence is already being used in the NHS to support clinicians and in labs to help diagnose illness more accurately. From genome sequencing at birth to AI-powered diagnostics, driverless transport and clean energy innovations, the future of science promises exciting opportunities and rewarding careers.

The experience gave our students a clear vision of what studying science at university could look like, and how it can lead to meaningful and impactful careers. It also reinforced the importance of aiming high and thinking ahead when it comes to future aspirations. This visit is part of our ongoing commitment to widening horizons, building confidence and helping every student see themselves as a future leader in their chosen field. We are proud of how our students represented The Lammas School and embraced this opportunity with focus and enthusiasm.
