Today, a select group of Year 11 and 13 students visited the University of Chichester for an engaging and informative sport workshop day. The event offered our students a unique opportunity to delve into advanced sports techniques and gain insights into higher education pathways in sports science.
The day began with a practical Handball session, where students analysed individual performances and compared the impacts of larger versus small-sided games. This hands-on experience helped them understand the dynamics of team sports and the importance of strategic gameplay.
Following this, the students participated in various small-sided football matches. Here, they focused on the critical skill of scanning when receiving the ball, a technique emphasised by renowned sports coach David Eldridge. Eldridge’s research, which involves collating performance data, is now utilised by premiership football teams to enhance player effectiveness on the field.
The University of Chichester also provided the students with an informative tour, including access to a lecture theatre and the state-of-the-art science lab known as an environmental chamber. This facility, capable of adjusting temperatures from 50Ā°C to -25Ā°C, is used for sports testing and provided the students with a glimpse into the rigorous scientific processes behind sports performance research.
The workshop was a tremendous success, offering students a deeper understanding of the pathways and careers available in sports through higher education. They returned inspired and motivated, with a clearer vision of how to continue their passion for sports at a university level.
Overall, the day was a fantastic blend of practical experience and academic insight, reinforcing the students’ enthusiasm for sports and their future aspirations.
